Fibre broadband vs dedicated internet access - which is better for your business?
For most businesses today, Location isn't their primary address – it’s their IP. With broadband lying at the heart of daily operations for both customers and employees, the options for internet connectivity should be accessible, affordable and easy to understand. This guide will explain everything to do with fibre broadband and dedicated internet access, so you can make the best decision possible based on your business’s needs.
What is fibre broadband?
Fibre broadband is a type of broadband connection that runs through fibre optic cables as opposed to the traditional, slower copper cables. The European Commission, as part of the Digital Networks Act, will require EU countries to create a national plan to phase out copper networks by 2030. Fibre broadband will serve as the primary replacement, enabling greater data capacity for multiple users without impacting connectivity and it works just as well for both residential homes and businesses.
What is dedicated internet access?
Dedicated internet access (DIA), also known as leased lines, is a private internet connection delivered through fibre or wirelessly. The key difference is that it does not operate across shared infrastructure in the same way fibre broadband does. In fact, it’s rarely used outside of corporate settings as it needs to be installed separately outside of existing infrastructure. However, the private connection offers internet speeds that are not impacted by traffic at peak usage times, so businesses don’t have to compromise on fast connectivity.
The advantages and disadvantages
Both full fibre broadband and DIA ultimately provide businesses with better speed, performance and reliability than traditional business broadband. However, comparing the two and assessing the advantages and disadvantages of both will ensure businesses get the most out of their internet connection for maximum efficiency and productivity. So, what are the main things to look out for when deciding on your connectivity plan?
1. Coverage:
As of March 2026, approximately 86% of premises in Ireland have access to fibre broadband, of which only 60% use it. Coverage across most areas is now suitable for business use but it's worth checking whether yours is one of them before making a decision. DIA has the benefit of being able to be installed anywhere, whether you have fibre coverage or not.
2. Speed:
Pure Telecom’s full fibre broadband offers up to 5,000Mb per second (5Gb), which means that your network can move one billion bits of data every second, similar to DIA. However, asymmetrical connections do go hand-in-hand with fibre broadband, which means that download speeds exceed upload speeds. DIA offers businesses symmetrical connection, which is ideal for cloud storage, large files and video calls.
3. Consistency of connections:
In comparison with traditional copper wire broadband, fibre optic cables are far more reliable. However, if your business needs a guaranteed private, uninterrupted connection, service level agreements provided by DIA will ensure premium support for your connectivity. Fibre broadband uses shared infrastructure, so peak hours can become busy and cause issues with occasional slowdowns.
4. Cost:
DIA is the more expensive option of the two. Between the exclusive connection, symmetrical bandwidth and the separate installation, it could be argued that the expense is worth the peace of mind. DIA also includes SLA committed repair times, meaning broadband providers have a legally bound deadline to fix a broken system or equipment. However, for smaller to medium businesses, DIA is often not necessary. Fibre broadband is the more cost-effective solution - it doesn’t require a separate installation process (which takes more time to set up), is ideal for smaller teams, and overall provides a secure connection for businesses.
